DP: Oleg Tcherkas and the Visual Narrative of 'Disfigura'

2024.10.17

  • Can you tell us more about yourself? (career/major/hometown/hobby...)

My name is Oleg Tcherkas, a cinematographer and camera operator based in Los Angeles, originally from Redding, CA. With 14 years in the film and broadcast industry, my journey began in Moscow, where I worked as a camera operator for an educational channel. I graduated from Moscow Technological College #14 as an Advertising Director, but my passion for the camera department led me to study cinematography at The Los Angeles Film School, graduating in 2020. I jumped into work during the pandemic and collaborated with producer Nate Lipp on various projects, including my first feature film shot with DZOFILM Pictor Zooms, now streaming on Amazon Prime.

  • What is your position in the feature film "Disfigura"? Could you share the idea/brief storyline of this film?

In "Disfigura," I serve as the cinematographer. The film, set in the 1950s, draws inspiration from "The Twilight Zone." It follows a typical American housewife who uncovers dark secrets her husband has kept hidden. The narrative explores themes such as unrealistic beauty standards, women's rights, and the medical industry's malpractice, reflecting ongoing societal struggles.

  • Why did you choose this topic? Where did the inspiration come from?

Nate Lipp approached me in January 2024 with the script for "Disfigura." I’ve always admired vintage films and their rich character. The opportunity to create something with that nostalgic aesthetic was irresistible. Through this story, I aim to address critical societal issues still relevant today.

  • What is the creation process like? How do you make shooting plans and select equipment? Any memorable experiences during filming?

The creative process starts with research. I revisited "The Twilight Zone" to analyze shooting techniques, focal lengths, lighting, and framing. Collaborating with the director, we discussed visual tools to bring the narrative to life. Storyboarding and brainstorming with the director are my favorite parts of the process. One memorable experience was capturing the unique vintage look that defines the film.

  • What factors made you choose Vespid Retros as the main lenses for this film?

I've been following DZOFILM and was excited when the Vespid Retro Primes were announced. After using the Vespid Primes on a previous short film, I was eager to try the Retros. Their unique look suited "Disfigura" perfectly, allowing us to capture the vintage aesthetic we aimed for.

  • What are your thoughts on shooting with the DZOFILM Vespid Retro Cine Prime Lenses? Any impressive moments?

The first thing I noticed about the Vespid Primes was their exceptional build quality. The focus ring is smooth and precise, making lens transitions effortless. They perform beautifully on gimbals and steadicams, and the image quality rivals that of much pricier lenses. Their affordability also allows us to allocate more budget to production design, enhancing the film's overall look.

  • What do you consider the most important aspect of filming? What are your thoughts on cinematic sense?

The story is paramount. Directing the viewer's focus on the narrative's key elements is crucial. Every detail contributes to the message, often subconsciously. Lenses are essential tools for cinematographers; reliable, consistent, and comfortable gear is vital. The DZOFILM Vespid Retro and Vespid Primes help create the smooth, warm look I love, complementing skin tones and adding beautiful bokeh.

  • We look forward to your next project; can you share anything about it?

"Disfigura" is just the beginning of a horror series inspired by "The Twilight Zone." We plan to create more films in this vein, and the Retro Primes will definitely feature again. I have several other projects in development, including documentaries and feature films, and I'm excited to get back into production soon.
