Cinematic Vision: Wade Muller Discusses the Unique Appeal of Pavo Anamorphic Lenses

2024.10.24

  • Please simply introduce yourself as a DP.
Hi, I’m cinematographer Wade Muller, HKSC, ACS. I split my time between Bangkok and Los Angeles, predominantly working on feature films.

In what situations or conditions did you get the chance to use our Pavo anamorphic lenses?
I first had the opportunity to use the Pavo Anamorphic lenses on an exciting project—a Vietnam War film featuring dinosaurs titled Primitive War. We had access to the entire set, including 28mm, 32mm, 40mm, 55mm, 65mm macro, 75mm, 100mm, 135mm, and 180mm, along with 2x 1.6X extenders, which provided incredible versatility for our shots.

  • In what scenarios (type of film/scene) would you prefer to use anamorphic lenses for shooting?
I gravitate towards using anamorphic lenses for films where the narrative benefits from additional depth and unique characteristics like flare and bokeh. They shine in dramatic scenes, whether capturing sweeping landscapes or intimate character moments, as the enhanced depth of field and distinctive bokeh contribute emotional resonance to the visuals.

  • How do you think of the Pavo anamorphics after using them?
The Pavo Anamorphics exhibit exceptional optical quality. They offer a distinctive cinematic feel with their unique flares and compression, which genuinely elevate storytelling. I’m looking forward to using them again in future projects!

  • Have the Pavo lenses helped you overcome any challenges in this filming? For example?
Absolutely. Compared to many other anamorphics on the market, the Pavo lenses have remarkable close-focus capabilities, including the 65mm macro option in the set, which significantly reduces the need for diopters. Their compact size is also a major advantage, making them easier to handle on set.

  • Which is your favorite focal length in the set to use? Why?
My favorite focal length is the 75mm. It strikes an ideal balance between versatility and character, allowing for intimate close-ups while still providing enough context in wider shots. It really enhances the storytelling experience.

  • How do you feel using the Pavo lenses on an Alexa 35 camera?
Using the Pavo lenses on the Alexa 35 feels like a perfect match. This combination delivers stunning image quality and depth, allowing me to fully exploit the capabilities of the camera and achieve the visual style I envision.

  • Based on your on-set experience, what innovative features would you like to see in DZOFILM's future products?
I would love to see a Pavo Anamorphic Zoom and a Vespid Retro Zoom!

  • Do you currently have any ongoing projects? Have you been using any other DZOFILM lenses in these shootings?
Yes, I’m currently shooting a feature in New York with the Pavo Anamorphic lenses, and I’ll be heading to Bangkok for another project right after. Over the past three years, I’ve shot three feature films using the Vespid Retros (Take My Hand, Scurry, Kiss of The Con Queen), which I absolutely love for their unique qualities.
