Building a Cinematic World: Gavin Booth on Using DZOFILM Vespid & Lustre for ‘Dreamcrusher

2026.3.31

  1. Please introduce yourself as a DP.

As a Canadian-born director, my film, music video, and commercial work has been showcased globally in theatres, on television, and online. My collaborations with third-party entities include notable names like Third Eye Blind, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Blumhouse, the Royal Bank of Canada, and more. I'm available for projects in the U.S. and Canada.

  1. You have used many DZOFILM lenses, including Vespid Prime, Catta Ace and Lustre Prime. What is your objective evaluation of DZOFILM products?

I have been shooting so many of my films and music videos with DZO lenses, that is the reason why I wanted to discuss the possibility of collaborating to shoot this new series using the DZO Arles lenses when I saw DZO team released the Arles Prime series for my new seven-episode murder mystery series project.

  1. When choosing lenses for your shooting projects, what parameters do you value most?

I like clean images. Since I mainly shoot music videos and independent films, I like DZO's Vespid and Catta Ace lenses. Another point I have to consider is the EF mount of the lens.

  1. You are the showrunner, director and writer of the project. I would like to know how you determine the script and then the shooting style and the shooting location.

I’m a showrunner in writing/directing scripted television, developed alongside William Cheverie and producer Christopher Splaine. Unlike other shows in the genre, “Dreamcrusher,” the first scripted series from the free streaming platform Reveel, may just incentivize its fans to solve the mystery before the finale reveal. With “Dreamcrusher,” Reveel is looking to launch the “reward” brand of entertainment, in which one lucky viewer will be able to score a big bag of money by pairing clues hidden within each episode with bonus clues planted in the real world to “expose the real Dreamcrusher.” It is an experimental new murder mystery series will encourage viewers to hunt for clues off-screen — and compete for a $100,000 cash prize.

  1. In the project Dreamcrusher, could you share why you initially wanted to choose our large-aperture Arles for this project? And the result is the retro version of Arles, the Lustre series lens, was used for this project. So after the project shooting, what are your and DP’s evaluations of Lustre Prime lenses?

Yes, when our team were preparing for this new series, the Arles prime were the hottest lens. As a loyal DZO user (I have Vespid and Catta Ace), I have great trust in your quality and can't wait to use Arles lens in my new project. My friend Yaya recommended the Luster lens to me, saying that it is a retro version of the Arles lens. I am very happy and honored to test it. Honestly they're my favorite lenses at the moment and I'm looking forward to working with them more.

  1. Why did the team choose blue as the logo color for the show? Why Gwyn's hair is blue?

The heroine in the TV series is a pop singer Gwyn who has the blue hair, because the score for the TV was composed and recorded by William "Bleu."

  1. Based on your on-set experience, what suggestion would you like to share in DZOFILM's future products?

DZO team has done a really good job. A demo would be great, but I am also curious if there is a way to work out a large discount on purchasing the lenses as an option. We already have a season 2 commitment for the series, and I would be able to commit to the same promotion for the second season as well (which will film in late winter, early spring).
